The Lords begin to abandon the side of the Mad King, leaving the House Targaryen vulnerable. The war leaned towards the rebels, which prompted King Aerys to send his last living son (Viserys) and pregnant wife Queen Rhaella to the safety of the ancestral Targaryen fortress, Dragonstone island. Rhaegar led his army to take down the rebels, but was defeated and killed by Robert in combat. He reigned peacefully for fifty years, during a period known as the golden age. After six years and sixty-six days in power he was found dead on the Iron Throne covered in blood.ĭespite his two marriages Maegor had no heir and so the throne went to Aenys's son, Jaehaerys I. Maegor had a tumultuous reign thanks to his tyrannical ways. Maegor was renowned for his poor temperament and violent nature and his claim was repeatedly challenged. His leadership was constantly questioned right up until he succumbed to ill health and died after having only reigned for five years.Īegon's half brother Maegor (also referred to as Maegor the Cruel) succeeded him, bypassing the claim of Aenys' son Aegon. He was an indecisive, weak king in both his ability to rule and his failing health. In 37-48 AC after Aegon I's death, his son Aenys took the throne. He was successful in his conquest, unified the seven kingdoms and founded King's Landing. 2 BAC - 0 AC: The Targaryens take WesterosĪegon the Conqueror – leader of now pretty much the only dragon-owning family in the world – invaded Westeros from Dragonstone, along with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya and his dragons. There was unrest between them and this chaos lasted a century, after which things began to settle. The aftermath of the Doom caused Valyria's outlying colony cities to break away and assert their independence. Earthquakes followed, adding to the wreckage and Essos fell into turmoil. The Doom of Valyria was a natural catastrophe that saw the The Fourteen Flames (a chain of volcanoes) erupt, causing the annihilation of an entire nation. As legend goes, Lord Aenar Targaryen was encouraged to bring his family from Valyria to Dragonstone after his daughter Daenys prophesied Valyria's downfall. The Targaryen family became the rulers of that island and began using it as a trading post with the Seven Kingdoms. The Valyrians took Dragonstone around 200 BAC, an island just off the eastern coast of Westeros in the Narrow Sea. Nymeria wed Lord Mors Martell and together House Martell conquered the rest of Dorne. Their warrior queen Nymeria realised they were no match for the Valyrians and their dragons and so they fled to Dorne, to the south of Westeros. With these great creatures they began expanding their influence.Īround 700 BAC The Valyrians' conquering ways brought them into conflict with the inhabitants of the River Rhoyne. The Valyrians found and tamed dragons with magic on the eastern continent of Essos. Those south of the Wall consider them to be barbarians and dubbed them Wildlings. Their detachment made them grow hostile towards the developing kingdoms in the south. They were the First Men who had unfortunately been living on the north side of the wall when it was constructed and who consequently were trapped there after its erection. The events also birthed the tribe known as the Free Folk. They suffered heavy losses which resulted in them disappearing from Westeros. The battle against the Walkers took its toll on the Children of the Forest. He also founded the castle of Winterfell, House Stark and the Night's Watch. They were successful and the White Walkers were eventually banished back to the north.īrandon Stark ('Brandon the Builder') raised the Wall with magic to prevent the Walkers from returning. Having a common foe forced the Children and the First Men to unite to defeat the Walkers. The White Walkers saw the darkness as an opportunity to invade Westeros from the north, causing immense suffering and destruction. That harsh winter was followed by a night that spanned years. A great winter descended over Westeros, lasting for generations.
